MADRID-BARAJAS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Madrid, Spain
Challenge
When the Madrid-Barajas International Airport (Spain) decided to build a new control tower and an additional runway, the project was faced with a multicultural challenge that required a two-fold solution:
  • Improve communication between the management staff of AENA (Spain’s equivalent to the FAA) and the Plan Barajas Project American consulting team, who were responsible for the design of a second runway and new control tower.
  • Create a set of easy-to-use internal document control procedures that would assure a smooth and effective communication at the administrative, technical and managerial levels.

Solution
Working closely with the Airport and acting as cultural liaison with the Project Team, Mr. Mayans created a set of procedures that were implemented as the Airport internal document management policies. He also directed the design of an Intranet site that serves as a collaborative project management tool, providing centralized information and communication between AENA and the Project Staff.

The system had to link to existing sensitive Data Centers and integrate data generated by the project’s scheduling system. A similar tool was integrated into part of AENA’s Intranet to assure that airport staff could not deviate from the Airport’s new document control policies.

Both tools were developed in English and Spanish.

Result
The Madrid-Barajas International Airport Director was extremely happy with the final product – a solution that addressed both issues. These new project management tools increased the consultant’s productivity, saving time and money. The implementation of document control policies also increased workflow and efficiency of internal procedures.
